Ingredient List
- 2 16oz cans of Jackfruit in brine or water
- 1 package of Brioche Hamburger buns
- 1/2 a teaspoon of BBQ seasoning
- 1/2 a teaspoon of Paprika
- Pinch of Salt and Pepper
- 1 Teaspoon of Garlic Powder & Onion Powder
- 1 Table spoon of Brown Sugar
- Ken’s BBQ Sauce or Sweet Baby Ray’s
- 1 bag Chopped Cabbage Mix
Step One: Rinse Jackfruit
Open and drain both cans of jackfruit. Then pour the fruit into a strainer and rinse extremely well. This step is especially important if your jackfruit is in brine. You will want to get rid of the sour taste.
Step Two: Pull Jackfruit and Remove Seeds
Now, you will need to separate or “pull” the jackfruit. You can do this by simply pressing on the jackfruit and it will rips apart. During this process you will want to remove any seeds and pits that you see. When you are done it should be fully shredded
Step Three: Rinse Again and Season
Rinse the jackfruit once again. This is to ensure that the brine is completely off of the jackfruit. Once you have done this remove the jackfruit from the strainer into a glass bowl. You will then add all the dry seasonings to the clean jackfruit. Cover this mixture and let the seasonings marinate for 1 hour.
Step Four: Time to Cook
Add the jackfruit to a pan and drizzle a little olive oil over medium heat. You will want the jackfruit to cook down for at least 7 minutes before adding the BBQ sauce. After 7 minutes add BBQ sauce to taste. Cook an additional 5 minutes before serving.
Optional Coleslaw:
Take your bag of chopped cabbage mix and add Italian dressing to taste. This is a great alternative to traditional sweet coleslaw and gives the opportunity to create a sweet and savory mix.
Step Five: Let’s Eat!
Toast your buns lightly and your pulled jackfruit to your bun! You can either eat the coleslaw on the side of add it into the sandwich.
